Naturalist Night: Plankton 101

Did you know that every other breath we take comes from phytoplankton? Dive into the hidden world of plankton and discover the tiny organisms that form the foundation of Monterey Bay’s rich marine ecosystem. Join marine scientist and educator Jane Silberstein for an engaging introduction to phytoplankton, zooplankton, and the remarkable roles they play in supporting ocean life. After the talk, you’ll have the opportunity to observe live plankton under a microscope and get an up-close look at these incredible microscopic organisms. Whether you’re a curious beachgoer, an aspiring naturalist, or simply fascinated by the ocean, this lecture will leave you with a new appreciation for the life drifting just beneath the surface. These amazing organisms form the base of the marine food web, produce much of the oxygen we breathe, influence the color of the ocean, and support countless species throughout Monterey Bay and beyond. REGISTER HERE Location: Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History Ticket Price: $12 Discounts: $5 member discount About the Speaker : Jane Silberstein brings more than 40 years of experience studying and teaching about the marine life of Monterey Bay. She earned her undergraduate degree in science with an emphasis in marine science from UC Santa Cruz and her graduate degree in Invertebrate Marine Ecology from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories. During her 33 years at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Jane worked on all three plankton guide stations, sharing the fascinating world of plankton with visitors from around the globe. She has also taught plankton through Cabrillo College’s Pacific Plankton Program for nearly six years, inspiring students to explore the remarkable microscopic organisms that support life in the ocean. Jane is passionate about making the microscopic world accessible to audiences of all ages and helping others discover the incredible diversity of life drifting just beneath the surface. Bringing Harmony to Life - Breema Retreat Weekend

📍 Hummingbird Valley Retreat Center
🕒 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM · $60

Please join us during this retreat weekend where you can discover self-care exercises, partner bodywork, and Nine Principles of Harmony. There are four relationships in our lives. By paying attention to them, we can bring more balance and harmony to everything we do. The first two relationships, our relationship to our body and our relationship to the outer world (job, money, friends, family), usually take most of our energy. The fourth relationship, our relationship to Existence, connects us to the greater meaning of life. To bridge these, Breema introduces us to a third relationship—the relationship to yourself. Through the third relationship, we connect mind and body, and learn to respond to life in ways that bring more harmony and balance to ourselves and those around us. In this weekend workshop, we will learn Breema bodywork and Self-Breema exercises, to acquire practical tools that can enable us to bring Breema’s harmonizing philosophy and principles into daily life. You can participate in the entire weekend, or attend just one or more of the four workshops. Pre-registration is recommended. Call or email the Breema Center for more information. Continuing Education may be available for this event. Visit breema.info/ce for more information and to sign up. Weekend Schedule Friday Open House: 6:30-7:00 Mini-sessions No Charge 7:00–8:30pm Class Workshop: Saturday: 9:30 am-12:30 pm 2:00-5:00 pm Sunday: 9:30 am-12:30 pm 2:00-5:00 pm Cost 10% discount if paid by September 15, 2026 — Use coupon code EARLYBIRD $200 for the weekend ($180 if paid by September 15) $60 per 3-hour workshop ($54 if paid by September 15) Meals are not included. Bruno Justi & Ram Dass & Snatam Kaur & Sukhmani Kaur Rayat

📍 Rio Theatre for the Performing Arts
🕒 7:30 PM · See listing

By Thy Grace: 25 Years of Mantra North America & Canada Tour 2026 In 2026, Snatam Kaur brings By Thy Grace: 25 Years of Mantra to audiences across North America and Canada. This is a continuation of a decades long journey of shared chanting, prayer, and healing through sound. These concerts are gatherings where stillness, devotion, and collective voice come together to create an experience of oneness and healing. Each concert begins gently and meditatively, building into moments of deep joy and powerful celebration, and finally, ending with stillness and prayer. Together, we will chant the mantras and songs that have held us through life’s greatest challenges and joys, honoring their capacity to bring us back to ourselves time and time again. The title By Thy Grace reflects the heart of this tour. After twenty-five years of recording and sharing her music, Snatam views this work as something carried by the grace of the mantras themselves, the musicians and collaborators who helped to bring them into the world, and the communities who have welcomed these songs into their lives. What began in humble beginnings as unfamiliar sounds to her audiences, has become a living language of healing, known deeply through personal experience. Accompanied by her band, Ram Dass (piano, clarinet, vocals), Bruno Justi (guitar, flute, vocals), and Sukhmani (percussion, vocals), along with some surprise guests, Snatam will share music spanning her discography, featuring well known classics as well as deeply personal songs from Snatam’s history that have never before been performed live, spanning 25 years of music that has become a soundtrack for healing across generations. Each night becomes a remembrance of inner stillness, shared humanity, and of the healing power that arises when voices join together. This tour is an invitation to gather once again, to chant together, and to celebrate the grace that continues to move through these mantras and through all of us.

Bringing Harmony to Life - Breema Retreat Weekend

📍 Hummingbird Valley Retreat Center
🕒 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM · $60
