A leading exponent of Irish traditional music, Téada is driven by a fascination for the timeless, expressive force of music inherited from previous generations of musicians. An Irish band with a truly worldwide reach, Téada has frequently appeared as headliners at major music festivals throughout the US, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Africa, Russia, Israel and Australia. Dance for Parkinson’s at Motion Pacific is a class for people with Parkinson’s Disease and their caretakers. The class is based on the innovative and internationally renowned Dance for PD® program designed by the Mark Morris Dance Group and the Brooklyn Parkinson Group. Trained Dance for Parkinson’s teachers use prompts and multiple dance styles to inspire movement, creative expression, and community. Dancers may sit in a chair, use a barre, or stand. Dance for Parkinson’s at Motion Pacific is open and free to the public. Classes are appropriate for anyone with Parkinson’s, no matter how advanced. Movement modifications will be made available and there is no dance experience required. Dance for Parkinson’s is offered every Wednesday from 1:00pm to 2:15pm, with the exception of the first Wednesday of the month, during which class is not held. Classes are offered in-person, in the Lobby at The 418 Project.

Grainne Hunt

Ireland-based singer-songwriter, Gráinne Hunt, will be performing at at Ugly Mug Café in Soquel on Wednesday 30th September. Acclaimed singer-songwriter Gráinne Hunt is thrilled to announce her upcoming US tour, a journey through vibrant venues in Washington, Oregon, California, Utah and New Mexico! In addition to the West Coast tour dates, Gráinne has been invited to showcase at FARM Folk Alliance and there will be a show in St Paul, MN too. The tour kicks off on the 10th September and features intimate performances at renowned venues, community spaces and listening audience-favourite rooms. Performing as a duo with San Diego’s Jules Stewart on drums and vocals, the pair create a sound that’s been compared to The Indigo Girls and Brandi Carlile - rich harmonies, heartfelt stories, and magnetic onstage chemistry. Together, they’ve been described as “the bi-continental queer folk duo you didn’t know you needed in your life.” Gráinne’s tour is gratefully supported by Culture Ireland and the Irish Department of Culture, Communications and Sports.

Cyrille Aimée (Sur­real M­A) is a French­Dominican vocalist and actress. Winner of the Montreux Jazz Festival's Vocal Competition, the Sarah Vaughn International Jazz Vocal Competition and finalist in the Thelonious Monk Vocal Competition, Aimée is—in the words of Will Friedwald of The Wall Street Journal—"one of the most promising jazz singers of her generation." In the same Wall Street Journal feature (which included vocalist Cecile McLorin Salvant), Friedwald declared both to be “astonishing creative singers, with a brilliant sound, fresh ideas, impeccable rhythm and an overall approach that honors tradition without being shackled to the past." Aimée was born in Fontainebleau, France, to a French father and Dominican mother. Her introduction to jazz was the result of the fortuitous location of her upbringing, the village Samois­sur­Seine—the same place where legendary gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt had lived. Every June for decades, gypsies have descended upon Samois, setting up caravans in nearby meadows for the annual Django Reinhardt Festival. During those June nights many years ago, after her parents would fall asleep, a young, curious Aimée would climb out her bedroom window and wander into the gypsy encampments. Aimée would sing by the fire with Django’s descendents and began to fall in love with the gypsy way of life—scampering home before the sun rose. Explained Aimée, "I was hypnotized by gypsy music which made me want to tap my feet; music that swings makes me so happy." As a teenager, Aimée performed in various Parisian cafés and clubs. When her family moved to Singapore, she remained in Paris to attend the American School of Modern Music. She also auditioned for "Star Academy," a kind of French "American Idol." Selected to be one of 16 semi­finalists, Aimée had second thoughts when handed a contract that tied her up every which way for years—including the songs to sing. Bassist Pete Novembre and drummer Bret Bailey formed the funk-jam powerhouse Elephino back in 1999. Bret and guitarist Matt Hartle formed Shady Groove in 2001. All three had played together as hired guns countless times before the lightbulb moment when someone finally said: what if we did our own thing? Indexical presents an evening of live electronic music with Joshua Kit Clayton and David Zicarelli. About the Artists Joshua Kit Clayton is a Portland, Oregon based electronic musician and computer programmer whose work ranges from abstract and experimental soundscapes to dancefloor focused tools for adventurous deejays. He first gained recognition in the late 1990s and early 2000s, amid the cross-pollination of electronic music that gave rise to glitch, microsound, and dub techno, and has releases on the Cytrax, -scape, and Mille Plateaux imprints. A longtime developer at Cycling '74, he has also been a major contributor to Max, the visual programming environment widely used in sound and media arts. David Zicarelli is the founder of Cycling '74, a music software company. He has been living and working in Santa Cruz since 1994.

5:30-7:30pm Local Honey is a Santa Cruz-based band that drips with honey sweet harmony and hums with tight, inventive musicianship. Local Honey's repertoire pays homage to some of the the big voices of the last seven decades, including Big Mama Thornton, Rachael Price, Gladys Knight, Stevie Nicks, Grace Slick, and Amy Winehouse, among other divas. They seek out feel-good songs with strong vocals and infectious beats and make them their own. Though Local Honey is a new band, all of them are veterans of the Santa Cruz and Monterey music scenes. Members have worked with Honeytone, Ten O'Clock Lunch, Come Together, Backyard Birds, Menage, and Bay Bop. Over the years they've played in different combinations at many venues, including Michael's on Main, Chaminade, Davenport Roadhouse, Hallcrest Vineyards, Joe's Bar and the Food Lounge.

Shoveling their own path, Diggin Dirt has seen sustained growth over the past few years, with multiple national tours and festival stops at Jam Cruise, High Sierra, Hulaween, Same Same but Different, Live Oak, Cascade Equinox, Joshua Tree Music Festival and many more. This alt rock act from Baton Rouge might still be fledgling (last year saw their first headline tour), but they are already making waves. Their song “Virginia” was co-written by Kevin Griffin of Better Than Ezra, their song “The Fence” was produced by Cage the Elephant’s Brad Shultz, and last year Coldplay’s Chris Martin attended their show at Vanderbilt University. Their tone borrows elements from The Strokes with 1990s college rock for a sound that’s familiar but still fresh and catchy. So, it’s kind of wild to find out they just dropped their debut full-length on September 18th, which only confirms this group has much more in store for hungry ears. -Mat Weir; Good Times Santa Cruz

The purpose of this Tibetan spiritual dance is to avert global calamities and bring peace and harmony to the world. Mipham Rinpoche prophesied that if this dance tradition can be propagated, then diseases, famines, and warfare would disappear without a trace, and the sun of happiness would shine. The late Khenpo Jigme Phuntsok promoted this dance practice. Tulku Lakshey Zangpo will teach these dances. Everyone of any age is very welcome. Previous experience or dance skills are not required. And they are meant to be joyful and fun.

Portland, Oregon’s Y La Bamba is led by singer, songwriter, guitarist and front woman Luz Elena Mendoza. Formed in 2008, Y La Bamba is a five-piece band inspired by both traditional Mexican corridos and indie folk. The group’s debut album, Alida St. earned positive critical notices for its synthesis of musical styles and visceral musical storytelling. Subsequent albums got similar praise from outlets like Rolling Stone, NPR Music and the New York Times. The group’s sixth and latest is 2023’s Lucha. Mendoza is the group’s mainstay. Ben Flocks is a saxophonist and storyteller with a clear, warm, and purposeful voice. A veteran performer and educator, Flocks has been lucky to play with luminaries in jazz and beyond, including Dave Brubeck, Patrice Rushen, Antonio Sanchez, and Jumaane Smith. His 2019 release Mask of the Muse features Flocks’ rendition of “Ebb Tide” which has been streamed more than twenty million times and went viral on TikTok. Growing up in the Santa Cruz mountains, Flocks witnessed lunar grandeur over the churning Pacific surf and filtered through redwood canopies. Following the advice of his elders, he spent over a decade living in New York City, learning from the masters and leading his own bands at the 55 Bar and Cornelia Street Cafe. Flocks is now grounded in Los Angeles where he balances performing with a full schedule teaching at Glendale Community College, Harvard-Westlake, and the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. At its foundation, his latest album Moonshades is a trio exploration, acutely aware of the history of saxophone triumvirates led by Flocks’ heroes Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, and Joshua Redman, but concerned with an entirely different avenue, thanks to bandmates Garret Lang and Jay Bellerose. While those trios often relished dexterity and unrelenting momentum, Flocks and his compatriots linger in the openness and unhurried propulsion that comes so naturally to them. For Flocks, the moon is a powerful reminder of the unknowable and the spirit of searching. SPAM New Media Festival continues with performances by electronic percussionist Sunken Cages, collaborative duo Rohan Chander & Scott Li, and artist / instrument builder Ava Koohbor. About the Artists Sunken Cages is the project of Indian-born drummer/electronic music producer Ravish Momin. He has studied with US Jazz master-drummer Andrew Cyrille and has worked as a sideman with a wide array of musicians including US Jazz legend Kalaparush Maurice McIntyre (AACM/Chicago) and pop-star Shakira. In the past, he led Tarana, a shapeshifting global-Jazz group, on international and domestic stages for 14 years. His current collaborative projects include 'Turning Jewels Into Water' (with Haitian electronic music pioneer Val Jeanty), a duo with dragonchild (Ethio-American saxophonist DA Mekonnen) and a trio with dancer Ishita Mili and video-artist Art Jones. Vocalist, composer, actor, and playwright Somi Kakoma is the Midwestern daughter of immigrants from Uganda and Rwanda. Hailed by The New York Times as “a virtuosic performer in full command of her instrument and powers,” she is known in the international jazz world simply as ‘Somi.’ Her 2021 GRAMMY nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album made her the first African woman ever nominated in any of the GRAMMY jazz categories, as well as the first Rwandan or Ugandan ever nominated for a GRAMMY. Her last release, Zenzile: The Reimagination of Miriam Makeba, was a companion project to the critically acclaimed original musical Dreaming Zenzile that Somi also wrote and starred in as a tribute to the great South African singer and activist. Her highly anticipated forthcoming album, What Does It Take to Bloom?, will be released in August 2026. Somi is a recipient of two NAACP Image Awards and a Doris Duke Artist Award. Recently, she made her Broadway debut in the titular role of the TONY Award-winning play Jaja’s African Hair Braiding.

Concertino Strings will open its 6th concert season at the Boulder Creek United Methodist Church, 12855 Boulder Street, on October 14th, Wednesday, at 11:30 am and October 17th, Saturday at 3:00 pm. The 25-person string chamber orchestra, directed by Joanne Tanner and Renata Bratt, gathers from all over Santa Cruz County. The concert will feature familiar selections from Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite (The Hall of the Mountain King, Anitra’s Dance, Ase’s Death, Solveig’s Song). Baroque fanfare will open the concert in Arcangelo Corelli’s Concerto Grosso No. 9 with Martin Gaskell on harpsichord. Dance for Parkinson’s at Motion Pacific is a class for people with Parkinson’s Disease and their caretakers. The class is based on the innovative and internationally renowned Dance for PD® program designed by the Mark Morris Dance Group and the Brooklyn Parkinson Group. Trained Dance for Parkinson’s teachers use prompts and multiple dance styles to inspire movement, creative expression, and community. Dancers may sit in a chair, use a barre, or stand. Dance for Parkinson’s at Motion Pacific is open and free to the public. Classes are appropriate for anyone with Parkinson’s, no matter how advanced. Movement modifications will be made available and there is no dance experience required. Dance for Parkinson’s is offered every Wednesday from 1:00pm to 2:15pm, with the exception of the first Wednesday of the month, during which class is not held. “Well at least nobody could ever accuse us of releasing too much music!” quips guitarist Greg Carmichael on the release of their latest EP The Empire of Lights, “but I think our fans know by now that we’re a little obsessive about only releasing music when we have something ready that we really love.” The four tracks on their latest release visit familiar themes for longtime fans, from the western shuffle of “8,000 Miles” to the reggae flavours of “Alisio”, the upbeat joy of “Back to Back” to the laid back groove of “Other People”. “We hope there’s something here for everyone,” says Miles Gilderdale, “we’re very lucky that over the years we’ve found fans that just get what we’re doing, so we can wear our influences on our sleeves and not have to try and fit into any one style.” With over thirty five years of recording and touring, the band’s longevity may be due in part to that spirit of never trying to fit in, but to just make music that they love, “I feel really grateful that we’ve been on such a long journey with our fans and they’re still there with us.” Carmichael says, “We talk after shows and it’s always such an honor to hear the stories of how our music has been the soundtrack to so many people’s lives”

Ripatti Rose Band - Live at Uncork Corralitos

Concertino Strings will open its 6th concert season at the Boulder Creek United Methodist Church, 12855 Boulder Street, on October 14th, Wednesday, at 11:30 am and October 17th, Saturday at 3:00 pm. The 25-person string chamber orchestra, directed by Joanne Tanner and Renata Bratt, gathers from all over Santa Cruz County. The concert will feature familiar selections from Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite (The Hall of the Mountain King, Anitra’s Dance, Ase’s Death, Solveig’s Song). Baroque fanfare will open the concert in Arcangelo Corelli’s Concerto Grosso No. 9 with Martin Gaskell on harpsichord. Harp soloist Jennifer Cass will join the orchestra both in Solveig’s Song from Peer Gynt and Grandjany’s Aria in Classic Style for harp and strings. Admission to concerts is FREE. Inspired by the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke, this program reflects on the idea that singing can reveal something deeper than ordinary—when inner life suddenly becomes audible. Music by Robert Schumann, Ivan Rosenblum, and Leonard Bernstein highlights the voice not simply as an instrument, but as a direct expression of what it means to be human. As Rilke understood, some things are too essential to be spoken. They must be sung.

Indexical is pleased to present an evening of music from the Nathan Clevenger Group and composer/improvisor Marc Perez. The Nathan Clevenger Group will be performing new arrangements of pieces from 'Astrolabe' (2025), a suite for large ensemble, as well the debut of a newly composed piece from a developing 'Astrolabe Apocrypha.' Marc Perez performs "Present/Out Of," a new multimedia work exploring the boundaries and relationship between sound, text & community. This piece aims to bring forth the question "how much of yourself can you give in order to be present and active, listening within a space?" About the Artists Nathan Clevenger is an Oakland-born composer and multi-instrumentalist, working on the margins of modern composition, jazz, and free improvisation. Since 2003, Clevenger's primary ensemble has been the Nathan Clevenger Group, which has ranged from 5 to 12 players and released four albums, most recently Astrolabe (2025). For Astrolabe, Clevenger expands his long-running Group to a 12-piece pocket chamber orchestra, featuring a five-member wind ensemble, cello, and a complement of three mallet percussionists augmenting the piano-bass-drums rhythm section. The seven-movement suite weaves together sounds and influences from 20th century concert music, jazz, film scores, collective and free improvisation, and percussion ensemble music, filtered through Clevenger's singular compositional aesthetic. Buster Williams is a prodigious artist, bassist, and bandleader whose collaborations include work with jazz giants such as Art Blakey, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, and Kenny Barron, to name a few. Williams has recorded soundtracks for movies including; David Lynch’s Twin Peaks and Spike Lee’s Clockers. Williams won a GRAMMY in 1979, and received five stars from DownBeat Magazine for his album, Crystal Reflections. In 2004, Williams celebrated the release of Griot Liberte featuring Stefon Harris, George Colligan, and Lenny White. Kevin Convey, of the Boston Herald, wrote, “Just when you thought nobody made the kind of jazz album that depends more on class, beauty, chops and communication than on concepts and star value, along comes bassist Buster Williams’ Griot Liberte. It’s enough to restore your faith in the art form.” In 2006, Williams performed with the Mary Lou Williams Collective on the critically acclaimed album The Zodiac Suite. In 2007, Williams recorded a trio date with the late John Hicks. Released as On the Wings of an Eagle, the album would be Hicks’ last recording. Dance for Parkinson’s at Motion Pacific is a class for people with Parkinson’s Disease and their caretakers. The class is based on the innovative and internationally renowned Dance for PD® program designed by the Mark Morris Dance Group and the Brooklyn Parkinson Group. Trained Dance for Parkinson’s teachers use prompts and multiple dance styles to inspire movement, creative expression, and community. Dancers may sit in a chair, use a barre, or stand. Dance for Parkinson’s at Motion Pacific is open and free to the public. Classes are appropriate for anyone with Parkinson’s, no matter how advanced. Movement modifications will be made available and there is no dance experience required. Dance for Parkinson’s is offered every Wednesday from 1:00pm to 2:15pm, with the exception of the first Wednesday of the month, during which class is not held. Dusk Dept. is a seven-piece collective emerging from the deep corners of the modern funk underground...a shadowy convergence of musicians whose fingerprints can be found on the grooves of Ghost-Note, Dumpstaphunk, Snarky Puppy, Daryl Johns, and other heavy hitters in the lineage of rhythm. Fonville x Fribush is the brand new musical collaboration from acclaimed drummer Corey Fonville (Butcher Brown) and in-demand organist Sam Fribush. Like a hip-hop link up from the 90s, the pair’s collective ear, musical talents, and friendship pushes the limits of the R&B organ trio sound into a youthful, tasty style of ‘blue collar jazz.’ Fonville x Fribush features a rotating cast of guitarists in the studio, including Charlie Hunter, Alan Good Parker and Morgan Burrs. Songs like “I Couldn’t Love You More” and “Blue Chips” immerse audiences in Atlantic Coast soundscapes of their hometown roots in North Carolina and Virginia. Ernest Aines is an award-winning Australian alt-folk singer-songwriter known for his striking voice, intricate guitar work and emotionally rich songwriting. Since the release of his debut album Spiral Bound, Aines has built a growing international audience through extensive touring across Australia, the UK, Ireland and the USA. His recent tours have included multiple sold-out shows, with audiences responding with standing ovations along the way.

Born in Oakland, California in 1950, Susan Muscarella began playing the piano when she was eight years old. Predisposed to improvising, she was encouraged by her first teacher to play the music she loved – jazz. Muscarella made the decision to become a professional musician while still in high school. In 1975, she was a composition major at UC Berkeley when UC Jazz Ensembles invited her to join its program’s faculty. The extracurricular program’s students inspired Muscarella to expand the curriculum into a bona fide program of study. She was promoted to Director in 1984, and, for the next five years, grew the program’s enrollment, expanded its curriculum and produced the largest annual collegiate jazz festival in the country – the Pacific Coast Collegiate Jazz Festival. The Piano Trios of Bud Powell, Bill Evans & Keith Jarrett will explore the artistry and unique qualities of some of jazz’s most beloved piano trios. Can’t make it in-person? You can stream it! Dance for Parkinson’s at Motion Pacific is a class for people with Parkinson’s Disease and their caretakers. The class is based on the innovative and internationally renowned Dance for PD® program designed by the Mark Morris Dance Group and the Brooklyn Parkinson Group. Trained Dance for Parkinson’s teachers use prompts and multiple dance styles to inspire movement, creative expression, and community. Dancers may sit in a chair, use a barre, or stand. Dance for Parkinson’s at Motion Pacific is open and free to the public. Classes are appropriate for anyone with Parkinson’s, no matter how advanced. Movement modifications will be made available and there is no dance experience required. Dance for Parkinson’s is offered every Wednesday from 1:00pm to 2:15pm, with the exception of the first Wednesday of the month, during which class is not held. Classes are offered in-person, in the Lobby at The 418 Project.

About the Artists Katie Porter is a clarinetist, performer/composer, writer, and artist. I always want it to look exactly the way it looks to me.” – Henry Diltz Henry Diltz‘s work as an iconic photographer in the 1960s and 1970s is celebrated for his unique “fly on the wall” style portraits and his ability to capture intimate moments with some of the world’s most influential musicians. Behind the Lens is a slideshow and storytelling experience – photographs that made music history and the stories by the man that took them. “I was a musician before I was a photographer,” says Diltz. “So I started out photographing my friends who then all happened to become famous!” Diltz was the official photographer at the historic Woodstock festival in 1969, 1994, and 1999. He has shot over 250 album covers and continues to document the music scene in Southern California. Diltz has recently been recognized with Lifetime Achievement Awards from the GRAMMYs, the Lucie’s, the International Photography Hall of Fame, Abbey Road Studios, & the American Society of Photographers. “Henry Diltz represents the pinnacle of our entire generation of music and musicians—a true hero to all of us who’ve known and worked with him through the decades. Since arriving in Los Angeles in 1972, we’ve been fortunate to call him a dear friend and collaborator on many of our album projects, after first admiring his extraordinary work capturing so many of our favorite artists. Layering subtle harmonies between acoustic and electric melodies, Tojo blends jazz, classical, and rock elements in his music. He rubbed elbows with members of Led Zeppelin back in the day and toured with big names like Lacy J Dalton. Over a career spanning 50 years he now enjoys creating an intimate presence as a solo artist or in a nuanced duo. Drummer Gary Kehoe, whom Tojo has known since the late 80s, is a go-to who creates the rhythmic canvas upon which Tojo can "kind of go crazy." - SLV Post Jim Greiner is a multiple award-winning, internationally acclaimed percussionist, corporate team building drumming pioneer, educator, inspirational speaker and community drumming leader. Jim has also recorded tracks for hundreds of songs, and for major movies featuring actors such as Willem Dafoe, Susan Sarandon, David Spade and more. Jim performs, teaches and conducts interactiverhythm sessions locally and worldwide for corporate and community groups, and for industry leader Latin Percussion Instruments. Jim has performed with such iconic artists as Quicksilver Messenger Service, Sista Monica Parker, Tammi Brown, Jerry Miller (#68 on Rolling Stones Magazines' list of top 100 Rock Guitarists), and more.
