Each week, children enjoy one hour of fun animal-themed education and activities, followed by one hour socializing with our shelter animals. They’ll learn about animal behavior, responsible pet care, shelter life, and safe animal handling before putting their new knowledge into practice by spending quality time helping our cats and dogs feel loved and confident. Children begin with PAWS Foundations, a three-week introductory program. Bill Trimpi, better known as Mr. Bill, has been educating local students and telling stories for the past 50 years. But for the last 35, he has also connected with hundreds of students at Soccer Camp. He just put out a new children’s book, Out of the Box. To celebrate its release, there will be an afternoon of puppetry, fun, and creativity. Along with the puppet show, there will be a Santa-Cruz-themed activity book filled with non-competitive games. Surfrider Foundation Santa Cruz is inviting community members to join its Fundraising Beach Cleanup-a-Thon at Rio Del Mar State Beach on Sunday, October 4, from 9:00 to 11:00 AM. The event will bring volunteers together to remove trash from the beach while raising funds to support Surfrider Santa Cruz’s local programs and free community cleanups. The concept is simple: participants sign up for the cleanup and ask friends, family, and coworkers to pledge donations based on the total amount of trash collected. After the cleanup, Surfrider volunteers will weigh the collective total of trash removed, and participating sponsors will make donations based on the Chapter-wide total. Supporters can also set a cap on their donation amount (for example, no more than $50). “Every piece of trash we remove makes a difference, but when our community comes together, we can make an even bigger impact,” said Darcie Connell, Co-Chair and Volunteer Coordinator of Surfrider Santa Cruz. “This event gives people a fun way to get involved while helping fund the programs that keep our beaches clean and protect our local coastline.” Surfrider Santa Cruz is a 100% volunteer-run Chapter. Funds raised through the Cleanup-a-Thon will support local programs including beach cleanups, Blue Water Task Force water quality testing, and other efforts to protect the Santa Cruz coastline. Participants are encouraged to invite friends, family, and coworkers to support the event by making pledges through the Chapter’s fundraising form. PAWS Afterschool Club (Ages 7–10) Looking for something fun to do after school? Love animals? Join PAWS and discover what it takes to care for shelter animals while making new friends and learning through hands-on activities! Each week, children enjoy one hour of fun animal-themed education and activities, followed by one hour socializing with our shelter animals. They’ll learn about animal behavior, responsible pet care, shelter life, and safe animal handling before putting their new knowledge into practice by spending quality time helping our cats and dogs feel loved and confident. Children begin with PAWS Foundations, a three-week introductory program. After graduating, they become PAWS Ambassadors, returning for additional sessions to build new skills, spend more time with the animals, and take on greater responsibilities as they progress toward becoming future Santa Cruz SPCA volunteers. Junior Animal Care Team (Ages 11+) Ready to level up your animal skills? If you love animals and want real, hands-on experience, the Junior Animal Care Team gives you the chance to go behind the scenes at the Santa Cruz SPCA! Start with a three-week training program where you’ll learn how to safely support shelter animals and prepare for your role on the team. Each session includes one hour of hands-on animal care projects—creating enrichment, preparing supplies, and helping support the shelter team—followed by one hour socializing with our shelter animals. After graduating, you’ll become a Junior Animal Care Team Member, returning for ongoing sessions to build your skills, take on more responsibility, and make a real difference for animals in need. It runs for three weeks and refines the children’s animal handling skills. The program establishes awareness of the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare and engages students in stories of animal rescues. Learn the how, where and why fire is used to manage the natural landscape at the Central Coast Good Fire Fair on Saturday, Oct. 10. The fair is free and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park in Felton in Santa Cruz County. The event is sponsored by the UC Agriculture and Natural Resources Fire Network & Santa Cruz Mountains Forests Program and California State Parks. "If conditions are right, you'll be able to see a prescribed fire carried out by local resource managers right in the heart of a Santa Cruz Mountains coast redwood grove" said Brian Woodward, UC Cooperative Extension forest advisor for Santa Cruz, San Mateo, and Santa Clara counties. The Good Fire Fair will offer educational activities for children and adults: Learn how to safely build, tend and extinguish a campfire Watch a live prescribed fire of redwood understory growth (likely between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., depending on the weather and permitting safe and favorable conditions) Savor sandwiches, burgers and Venezuelan food from local food trucks Observe demonstrations and visit informative booths Learn how to make your home more resilient to wildfire Test your fire knowledge and win prizes “The event will also include organizations from across our region related to good fire, home hardening, and natural resource management, with lots of fun activities for those of all ages,” said Woodward. Hosted Mic’d Board Games 5 – 8 Trivia 8 – 10 The Game Night Collective is a Santa Cruz-based board game community that creates welcoming, hosted tabletop events where people can discover new games, meet new friends, and enjoy structured game nights without needing prior experience. What do ancient seafloors, Swiss cheese and portions of the Santa Cruz Mountains have in common? Probably not much, but tell that to the bedrock. Portions of the UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) campus and adjacent Wilder Ranch State Park are characterized by a rare phenomena on the West Coast–karst topography. A karst landscape features sinkholes, streams that dive underground, springs, caves, and more. Join geologist and retired UCSC Earth and Planetary Sciences Senior Lecturer Dr. Hilde Schwartz and UCSC Campus Natural Reserve Manager Alex Jones for an exploration of the fractured marble bedrock of Empire Cave and learn about the hydrological and geological processes that created it, as well as some of the biology that makes it an incredibly rare ecosystem. As part of his duties, Alex is responsible for monitoring and managing the campus’s Empire Cave. Hilde Schwartz is an earth scientist who’s dabbled in both geology and paleontology. Her research always begins ‘in the field’, and her main field regions have been in Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Egypt) and the American southwest (including California). Participated in research with the New Mexico Museum of Natural History on dinosaur sites in New Mexico. In the late 1990s, she proposed a new class at UCSC called ‘The Natural History of Dinosaurs’, which she taught from 1999 until her retirement from the Earth and Planetary Sciences Department in 2024. A fun and easy-to-learn way of drawing structured patterns to create beautiful images. The Zentangle Method makes drawing patterns, or tangles, accessible to almost anyone of all ages since tangles are created from basic pen strokes. If you can write your name, you can create art with Zentangle. As you draw tangles you will likely experience increased focus, calm, creativity and well-being. For those of you who attended the Introductory Zentangle class on February 20, this class will also introduce Zentangle and review the Zentangle Method. However, we will be doing variations of previously taught tangles and/or new tangles, so you will create a completely different Zentangle tile than before. It is the only State Monarch Preserve in California. On warm days, the butterflies fly all around you, giving you an ethereal experience. On cold days, the butterflies clump up in groups high in the trees, making for terrific photos. Bring binoculars, or a telephoto lens, and $10 for parking close to the entrance to the grove. This nighttime experience will bring you a magical and immersive perspective on the ancient forest at Roaring Camp. During the 0.8-mile loop walk, you will view 26 unique, lighted lanterns, hung approximately 50 feet above the ground. The lanterns were crafted by local artists including Anna Bobisuthi, Roaring Camp’s resident blacksmith, and Chris Butler, who also created the lighting design for Sequoias at Night. In this workshop, we will put aside our power supplies and look closely at the unique characteristics of so-called "passive" electronic components. Transformers, capacitors, diodes, inductors, and others will be examined for their abilities to uniquely modify audio signals. As we establish basic approaches for passive mixing, filtering and clipping, we will surreptitiously introduce simple, albeit active, amplification to look at the great range of possibilities afforded by just a little gain. In conclusion, we'll take a look at Ralph Jones' "Star Networks at the Singing Point", written for arrays of electrical junk thrown in feedback configurations. Level: Introductory. Open to guests of all ages and skill levels. Required Materials: Some junk will be provided, but feel free to bring any strange-looking electronics you've pulled out of the trash. About the Instructor Matt Wellins, found most frequently at transfer stations, dollar stores, and internet forums for bootlegged films, otherwise resides in New Haven, CT. His work is broadly occupied with the ways that material objects resist control, the snafus of live performance, and how difficult it is to do very simple things. Insomuch as any of this can be heard, he generally works with analog circuitry, field recording, and computer programming. He has released music on What the…? Records and presented work at Anthology Film Archives (with Sarah Halpern) and the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center in Troy, NY.

This monthly series of writing workshops in Evergreen Cemetery is facilitated by local poet Gabriel Kittle-Cervine. Rite Life is a workshop that blends the act of automatic writing, with our individual practices of ancestor veneration, to confront that which haunts us, and to celebrate that which allows us to live. The workshop was born in 2016 from the vision of a profound poet and spiritual teacher named Honeysun, just a couple of years before she passed beyond this life. Each session includes one hour of hands-on animal care projects—creating enrichment, preparing supplies, and helping support the shelter team—followed by one hour socializing with our shelter animals. After graduating, you’ll become a Junior Animal Care Team Member, returning for ongoing sessions to build your skills, take on more responsibility, and make a real difference for animals in need. PAWS Afterschool Club (Ages 7–10) Looking for something fun to do after school? Love animals? Join PAWS and discover what it takes to care for shelter animals while making new friends and learning through hands-on activities! Each week, children enjoy one hour of fun animal-themed education and activities, followed by one hour socializing with our shelter animals. They’ll learn about animal behavior, responsible pet care, shelter life, and safe animal handling before putting their new knowledge into practice by spending quality time helping our cats and dogs feel loved and confident. Children begin with PAWS Foundations, a three-week introductory program. After graduating, they become PAWS Ambassadors, returning for additional sessions to build new skills, spend more time with the animals, and take on greater responsibilities as they progress toward becoming future Santa Cruz SPCA volunteers.
