Each session includes one hour of hands-on animal care projects—creating enrichment, preparing supplies, and helping support the shelter team—followed by one hour socializing with our shelter animals. The Scotts Valley Multicultural Fair is a free celebration aimed at broadening our understanding and appreciation for multiculturalism and diversity. There will be: Live musical acts from all different backgrounds and influences. Dance troupes performing captivating routines; with audience participation encouraged! Food vendors to explore. A fashion show to show-case traditional clothing of different cultures. Art displays representing different cultures and age groups. Booths displaying and offering activities representing different cultures.

Santa Cruz Porchfest is a free, all-ages, one-day music event that turns downtown porches into stages. Wander the neighborhood, follow the sound, and discover your new favorite band on a neighbor’s front steps. On the day: Several bands playing on porches across downtown. (Including the Santa Cruz County Visitor Center) Music from 12 to 6pm, with sets running about an hour each. Walk the route at your own pace — bring water, a friend, a kid. Food and drinks at local spots along the way.

Bill Trimpi, better known as Mr. Bill, has been educating local students and telling stories for the past 50 years. But for the last 35, he has also connected with hundreds of students at Soccer Camp. He just put out a new children’s book, Out of the Box. To celebrate its release, there will be an afternoon of puppetry, fun, and creativity. Along with the puppet show, there will be a Santa-Cruz-themed activity book filled with non-competitive games. It also includes the story of Soccer Camp and several of Trimpi’s original stories, including “Surfer Cat,” “Stumpy the Tree,” and “Star Girl.” The new book will be available to purchase and Trimpi will happily sign them. -Isabella Marie Sangaline; Good Times Santa Cruz

Hosted Mic’d Board Games 5 – 8 Trivia 8 – 10 The Game Night Collective is a Santa Cruz-based board game community that creates welcoming, hosted tabletop events where people can discover new games, meet new friends, and enjoy structured game nights without needing prior experience. Mark the fall migration at one of the most beautiful places on the planet for the Monterey Bay Festival of Birds featuring field trips, workshops, family-fun activities, and keynote speakers. Activities are planned throughout the Monterey Bay area in Santa Cruz, Watsonville, Salinas, and Monterey. All events are free to children 12 and under but must be accompanied by an adult.

Preteen PAWS Tier 2, for returning students 10-12 years old, builds upon the children’s knowledge and skills about animals in PAWS Tier 1. It runs for three weeks and refines the children’s animal handling skills. The program establishes awareness of the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare and engages students in stories of animal rescues. Participants play games about animal welfare, train dogs, walk dogs, make enrichments and write descriptions of shelter animals for the SPCASC website. Register now for animal snuggles!

Learn what is involved in growing our food and get a behind-the-scenes look into our region’s vibrant working agricultural landscape. Learn about the sustainable agriculture methods used to grow our food and spend a day outside getting to know our farming community. Healthy food, farms and families is what we’re all about! Friends and Family Weekend Pass - $25 admits 1 carload of up to 5 people to farms both Saturday and Sunday.

The Santa Cruz County Parks Department hosts an annual Floating Pumpkin Patch at Simpkins Family Swim Center in Santa Cruz, California. Emilie Lygren is a poet and outdoor educator who has taught writing in classrooms, research stations, graduate programs, parks, libraries, and beyond. She has also written two books of poetry and dozens of resources on science education and social emotional learning. Emilie lives in San Rafael, CA. Nancy Miller Gomez (she/her) is the author of Inconsolable Objects (YesYes Books, 2024), winner of the 2025 Paterson Prize in Poetry. She served as the Poet Laureate of Santa Cruz County, California, for 2025 and 2026 and received a 2025 Laureate Fellowship Award from The Academy of American Poets. Monarch migration is variable and population numbers and dates are different each year. The monarchs typically begin arriving in mid-October and leave by mid-February. At Natural Bridges, late October and all of November is often the best time to go for a walk and observe the monarchs. The Monarch Grove at Natural Bridges has been declared a Natural Preserve, thus protecting these butterflies and their winter habitat from human encroachment or harm. It is the only State Monarch Preserve in California. On warm days, the butterflies fly all around you, giving you an ethereal experience. On cold days, the butterflies clump up in groups high in the trees, making for terrific photos. Bring binoculars, or a telephoto lens, and $10 for parking close to the entrance to the grove. Hold on to that receipt! Once you have paid for parking at one state park, you have paid for all state parks for the day, and there are over 14 in Santa Cruz County alone!

Youth Fall Maker Camp (ages 7-12) Our Fall 2026 Maker Camps offer children ages 7–12 a fun, hands-on way to spend their school breaks! Camp runs from 9:00am–2:30pm, with 1:00-5:00pm extended Maker Studio hours available during select minimum school days. Campers will build, create, and explore projects across our studio zones, including 3D printing, woodworking, sewing, beading, and laser engraving. PAWS Afterschool Club (Ages 7–10) Looking for something fun to do after school? Love animals? Join PAWS and discover what it takes to care for shelter animals while making new friends and learning through hands-on activities! Each week, children enjoy one hour of fun animal-themed education and activities, followed by one hour socializing with our shelter animals. They’ll learn about animal behavior, responsible pet care, shelter life, and safe animal handling before putting their new knowledge into practice by spending quality time helping our cats and dogs feel loved and confident. Children begin with PAWS Foundations, a three-week introductory program. After graduating, they become PAWS Ambassadors, returning for additional sessions to build new skills, spend more time with the animals, and take on greater responsibilities as they progress toward becoming future Santa Cruz SPCA volunteers.
