Open House Tour at the New Puppetry Institute!

πŸ“ The Puppetry Institute Β· Capitola Β· See listing

Important News from The Puppetry Institute Like many arts organizations, we’ve been navigating the realities of a challenging economic landscape. Running two separate locations has become increasingly difficult, and after a great deal of thought we’ve made the decision to move from our previous location and reopen our art school inside our MIDDLEOF space, unit D-06 in the Capitola Mall. While change is never easy, we truly believe this move creates something exciting. By bringing everything together under one roof, we’ll be able to continue offering our incredible workshops while also having enough space for our interactive puppetry installations, art gallery, and live performances. It allows us to create a home where imagination, education, and immersive art can exist side by side. These are difficult times for the arts, and organizations like ours are constantly finding creative ways to keep the magic alive. We believe this move will help ensure that we can continue sharing our unique brand of creativity, storytelling, and wonder with the Central Coast community we’re proud to call home for the past 10 years Thank you to everyone who has supported us through every chapter of this journey. Your encouragement, attendance, donations, and belief in what we do continue to make all of this possible. We’re excited for this next adventure and can’t wait to welcome you into this new chapter of The Puppetry Institute. Learn more about who we are and what we do please visit us Sept 4th from 4-7pm for a tour of our classroom and our magical 5000 sq ft

Stage Presence for Adult Dancers: From Technique to Connection

πŸ“ Motion Pacific at the London Nelson Community Center
πŸ•’ 6:30 PM – 7:45 PM Β· $15

Have you ever learned choreography but felt unsure how to make it come alive in performance? This course with Mara Frey at Motion Pacific is designed for beginning adult dancers who want to feel more confident, expressive, and comfortable being seen. Stage presence isn't about being the most technically advanced dancer in the room, it's about connecting with the music, communicating intention, and engaging your audience. Through guided exercises, movement exploration, and performance practice, you'll learn how posture, focus, emotional expression, and audience connection can transform the way you dance. In a supportive and encouraging environment, students will explore: building confidence and reducing performance anxiety, using focus, posture, and energy to command attention, expressing emotion and intention through movement, connecting authentically with an audience, recovering gracefully from mistakes during performance, and developing a personal performance style. This class is open to dancers of all styles and requires no prior performance experience. Whether you dream of performing on stage, social dancing with more confidence, or simply bringing greater expression to your movement, you'll leave with practical tools to help your dancing feel more engaging, intentional, and alive. By the end of the course, participants will perform a short dance phrase and gain skills they can apply to any dance style or performance opportunity. What to bring: comfortable dance attire, water, and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone in a supportive setting.

A creation of perfect balance. As time passed, evil spread over the land like a plague, slowly consuming everything in its path. In the final moments before light was lost to the shadow for all time, a weapon of infinite power was created, the Magic Sword. Thus, restoring balance to the universe. The genesis of things are often small. As the single seed grows to a mighty oak, so too did the path of the Keeper begin as a single choice in an age long past. Once a humble king, he was manipulated into unleashing the Dark One. All of reality was torn asunder as the Lord of Shadow was released from their ancient prison, having been bound by the power of the the Magic Sword. From that day forth, the King was cursed to be the eternal Keeper of this powerful key. He has been compelled for millennia to find the Chosen One who will unleash the true power of the weapon and won't rest until the grand design is complete with the Darkness bound once again. The Keeper of the Magic Sword searches endlessly for the Chosen One. This prophesied being contains the ability to wield the power of the Magic Sword and seal the prison that holds Dark One for all eternity. Until the chosen one is revealed, search continues in this realm and many others throughout all of time and space. In what form will the Magic Sword manifest? Who is the Chosen One? Answers will reveal themselves as the need arises. A tale of high adventure as old as time itself. SKYLIMIT Hailing from Boise, Idaho, Skylimi

πŸ•’ 8:00 PM Β· See listing

The core of Nashville-based Slap Dragon is Scott Mulvahill on bass and Laura Berens on vocals. Supported by a backing group, the two weave a musical tapestry through use of acoustic instruments, but the result seamlessly moves beyond the traditional framework of acoustic music, taking in textures from disco to rhythm and blues. After a run of single releases in 2024 and 2025, Slap Dragon just released their debut full-length, Mission Statement. Highlights of that set include the funky β€œAlready Won” and the alluring acoustic deep groove of β€œGirl Dinner.” -Bill Kopp; Good Times Santa Cruz

I spent that year living in a barn with the squirrels and the birds, on my own most of the time, and I discovered so much about music and how to create it, says the Tennessee-bred singer/songwriter. Instead of going into a studio with a producer for two weeks, I just waited for the record to build itself. Id get up and go outside, see a butterfly and connect that with some impulsive thought Id had three months ago, and suddenly a song Id been working on would make sense. Thats how the whole album came to be.The follow-up to 2018s critically acclaimed Wide Awake, If I Were a Butterfly finds Baxter co-producing alongside Tim OSullivan (Grace Potter, The Head and the Heart) and Kai Welch (Molly Tuttle, Sierra Hull), slowly piecing together the albums patchwork of lush psychedelia and Beatlesesque pop. In addition to working at Thunder Sound (the Kentucky studio he called home for months on end), Baxter recorded in California, Texas, Tennessee, and Washington, enlisting a remarkable lineup of musicians: Shakey Graves, Lennon Stella, several members of Cage the Elephant, Zac Cockrell of Alabama Shakes, Morning Teleportations Travis Goodwin, and legendary Motown drummer Miss Bobbye Hall, among many others. In an especially meaningful turn, two of the albums tracks feature the elegant pedal

Per a 2024 Jam Cruise writer, This was the soul music I grew up with in the 60s and 70s, but I confess I wasnt expecting [Diggin Dirt] to be throwing it down this hard. This group is impossibly tight, and Zach Alder might be the best soul shouter Ive ever heard, and Ive heard a few. Their infectious sound is fueled by blazing horns, searing guitars and a relentlessly driving rhythm section, and tying it all together is the bands frontman who launches the ensemble into rarefied air with his pipes, charisma and natural-born soul. With flashes of James Brown or Sly and the Family Stone, Otis Redding or Tower of Power, the bands sound is both familiar and yet refreshingly original, layering psychedelic rock, Motown soul, afrobeat and even reggae atop a thick foundation of late-60s inspired funk.

Dungeons and Dragons for Adults

πŸ“ Downtown Branch Library
πŸ•’ 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM Β· See listing

Come join the magical world of D&D storytelling, where you can be a bard, a wizard, or a barbarian for a few hours and let your creativity run free. Solve weird and wonderful problems with spells, cunning, or daggers and make some new friends in the process. Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned player you will be welcomed every 1st Sunday for an afternoon of collaborative storytelling at the Downtown Branch. Friendly game masters will be ready with dice, characters, and the start of a story; all we need is your creativity and enthusiasm. No prior experience is necessary. This program is for adults 18+. This program also happens on 3rd Saturdays at the Capitola Branch from 12-5. What is Dungeons and Dragons? D&D is one of many tabletop roleplaying games, in which players create and control fictional characters within a shared imaginary world. A Game Master guides the story and sets the scene, while the players make decisions for their characters, rolling dice to determine outcomes. TTRPGs encourage creativity, teamwork, and storytelling as players collaborate to overcome challenges and complete quests. Modern D&D has veered away from the combat-heavy game it used to be. While it's still possible to spend hours attacking monsters and finding loot, many groups now tell stories of mystery, intrigue, horror, or whimsy. Who are the game masters? This event is organized by Jeltje van Baren ( [email protected] ), who learned to play a few years ago and has been creating games for new players ever since. She will be assisted by a rotating group of diverse GMs from the local TTRPG community, all of whom are used to patiently explaining the rules and keeping the game fun for everyone.

The group who is made up of Nick Tozzo (drummer and percussionist), Nicolas Sanchez (bassist), and Mauro Lopez (guitarist) craft a genre-blending sound that drifts between the lush jungles of Colombia, the palm-lined streets of 1960s coastal Mexico, and the dusty cantinas of West Texas.Sanchezs Colombian roots, growing up listening to his parents beloved salsa and cumbia; Lopezs parents Mexican and American discography, which spanned from traditional Tejano to improvised jazz; and Tozzos love for jazz and salsa music, the latter stemming from his college years, leading him to study and live in Colombia to experience music greats first-handedly. All of this, paired with their undeniable chemistry and meshed with their now hometown Austins innovative creative sounds has led them to create the unique sonic movement that is The Animeros, a name inspired by Colombian shamans who would usher lost souls to their peace.Their journey took an unexpected turn when their music reached the ears of Dan Auerbach, the Grammy Award winning producer, songwriter, and frontman of The Black Keys. Auerbach first heard them by chance, music floating from an open hotel window that stopped him in his tracks. Captivated, he made a note to track them down, and within a yea

The Breaks brings together guitarist Eddie Roberts (The New Mastersounds), drummer Stanton Moore (Galactic), and organist Robert Walter (The Greyboy Allstars)three musicians whose collective groove has shaped the sound of contemporary funk for over two decades.Rooted in the tradition of late-60s organ trios and hard-hitting boogaloo, The Breaks pushes the sound forward with deep-pocket rhythms, tight arrangements, and fearless improvisation. Eddie Roberts sharp, melodic guitar work dances effortlessly over Stanton Moores explosive New Orleans-infused drum grooves, while Robert Walters signature Hammond organ tones tie it all together with grit and soul.Between them, theyve logged countless tours, recorded landmark albums, and collaborated with a whos-who of the modern jam, funk, and jazz worlds. But in The Breaks, the chemistry feels spontaneousthree kindred spirits locking into a groove and letting it ride. From sweaty club sets to major festival stages, The Breaks deliver a sound thats both deeply rooted and constantly evolvinga raw, joyful celebration of rhythm and musical conversation.

From the moment he heard Sugar Hill Gangs 1980 classic Rappers Delight, the Bay Area Hip Hop luminary knew hed found his calling. Twenty-five years later, LB has obliterated the stereotypes of what an MC is supposed to look like and captured the hearts of countless fans who gravitate to his distinctive voice. Hes now the only Asian-American MC to release 10 studios albums and the first to play major music festivals like Coachella and Lollapalooza. From his Quannum Recordings debut with Latyrx,1997s The Album, to 2003s seminal solo album Later That Day, hes consistently pushed the boundaries of his craft. His newest project, Quite A Life, is like the exclamation point on his milestone year. Ten albums is a lot for any artist, let alone an indie artist who colored outside the lines, so to speak, LB says. Im just appreciative there was always somehow a path for me, no matter how impossible it seemed either on paper or in practice. As the first Asian-American to release a greatest hits compilation, hes pumped out multiple smash singles across four official studio albums. From Stop Complaining to Callin Out and I Like It, I Love It and I Changed My Mind, his material has always retained a musically eclectic feel.

Premier Cruz: A Mountain Cabernet Experience

πŸ“ Santa Cruz
πŸ•’ 3:00 PM – 5:30 PM Β· $95

Join us for an exclusive Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet wine tasting salon featuring 15+ producers, light bites by Oak and Rye and a silent auction Nestled in the hills above Los Gatos at exclusive new venue Lexington Hills Estate, wineries will each pour a current release alongside a rare, older vintage, showcasing the ageability of Santa Cruz Mountain Cabernet and allowing guests to experience a side-by-side comparison. Premier Cruz isa vibrant, annual tasting that celebrates Cabernet Sauvignon produced in the Santa Cruz Mountains American Viticulture Area (AVA).It's an opportunity to meet an array of Cabernet producers while enjoying world-class wines, gourmet bites and a silent wine auction. Since the late 1800's the Santa Cruz Mountains has been recognized as a premium Cabernet-producing region, when local winegrowers began to win acclaim in national and international competitions. At the Judgment of Paris in 1976, a blind tasting proved that California wines could equal and even surpass the great French wines. One of the twelve wines chosen to represent California was Ridge Vineyards' Monte Bello Cabernet from the Santa Cruz Mountains. The tasting was repeated in 2006 with the same vintages and the Ridge Monte Bello was judged the top-rated wine. The Santa Cruz Mountains is a special place for growing Mountain Cabernet. The region offers an array of individual microclimates, hot days and cool nights, marine influences, high elevations, distinctive soils and fruit from 80 acres or less, all contribute to the distinct flavor profiles of a mountain Cabernet unlike those of Napa or Sonoma. Location: Lexington Hills Estate & Winery Los Gatos, CA - Google Maps Image Here *All ticket pricing is inclusive of food, wines and gratuities. All events are open to the public and reserved for guests 21 and over. This is a rain-or-shine event. Tickets are non-refundable.
