UC Santa Cruz researchers are closely tracking the development of a potential โsuper El Niรฑoโ this year. In this Kraw Lecture, two UC Santa Cruz experts will explore the natural forces that drive El Niรฑo events, how scientists forecast major climate shifts, and what current research can tell us about the months ahead. While every El Niรฑo is unique, decades of research at UC Santa Cruz provide valuable insights into potential impacts and how communities can prepare. Attendees will also get an early look at findings from Californiaโs Fifth Climate Change Assessment and explore CoSMoS Adapts, an innovative project examining future coastal flood risks and the effectiveness and cost of different adaptation strategies. Join us for a timely conversation about what a changing climate and a potential major El Niรฑo could mean for Californiaโs coast and communities. The Santa Cruz Film Festival is not the kind of festival where you simply watch a movie, clap politely, and head home. Step inside the wonderfully unpredictable world of independent filmโwhere original stories, fearless filmmakers, curious audiences, and the creative spirit of Santa Cruz come together for five unforgettable days. Explore narrative films, documentaries, animation, experimental work, environmental stories, student projects, locally produced films, and voices that challenge the familiar. Meet the filmmakers behind the screen, ask questions during live Q&As, and discover how an idea becomes a script, a production, and eventually a story shared with an audience. And because some of the best conversations happen after the credits roll, the festival experience extends far beyond the theater. Enjoy industry panels, filmmaker mixers, live music, culinary events, beer and cider tastings, mixology demonstrations, beachside sโmores, parties, and gatherings in some of Santa Cruzโs most memorable locations. Whether you are a lifelong film lover, a filmmaker searching for inspiration, a student exploring the industry, or simply someone who enjoys discovering something new, Santa Cruz Film Festival offers a place to connect, celebrate, learn, laugh, and be surprised. Come for the films. Stay for the stories, the food, the people, the parties, and the wonderfully cinematic energy of Santa Cruz. This October, donโt just watch the festival. Be part of it.

Since the late 1800's the Santa Cruz Mountains has been recognized as a premium Cabernet-producing region, when local winegrowers began to win acclaim in national and international competitions. At the Judgment of Paris in 1976, a blind tasting proved that California wines could equal and even surpass the great French wines. One of the twelve wines chosen to represent California was Ridge Vineyards' Monte Bello Cabernet from the Santa Cruz Mountains. The tasting was repeated in 2006 with the same vintages and the Ridge Monte Bello was judged the top-rated wine. The Santa Cruz Mountains is a special place for growing Mountain Cabernet. The region offers an array of individual microclimates, hot days and cool nights, marine influences, high elevations, distinctive soils and fruit from 80 acres or less, all contribute to the distinct flavor profiles of a mountain Cabernet unlike those of Napa or Sonoma.
