Soft Pastel Painting runs in six week intervals taught by instructor Sarah Orre. A short demo will be taught the first class meeting with reference photos that will teach color theory, underpainting, texture, layering, and movement. Students are encouraged to bring additional reference photos for inspiration. Participants bring their own soft pastels (not oils), and sanded paper. The remainder of the class meetings are used for studio time. The last day we have a group peer review to discuss our work and give and receive feedback.

Cathy and Jamie are romantically involved for five years, and the audience watches it unfold from each perspective. Cathy’s view of the relationship will begin at the end and work its way back to the beginning, while Jamie’s perspective starts at the beginning of the relationship and moves to the end. The story features beautiful and clever music that explores the sacrifices and costs of relationships. Audiences will contemplate how relationships affect how we define ourselves. In my work I aim to create a sense of tranquility and feeling of nurturing as a way of recovering our sense of self in a chaotic world. The art is happy and colorful with contrast and organic marks bringing a deeper sense of movement and interest in my paintings. I want you to discover where it might take you – a restful place or somewhere far removed from the everyday and mundane. I believe art should be more than visual, I want it to be an experience for the viewer. I paint to make us feel that we are all seen, accepted, understood, and included in this world as a part of our greater shared experiences. This October marks the 175th anniversary of the publishing of the novel Moby Dick by Herman Melville. Unappreciated at the time, Moby Dick was ahead of its time in subject matter and style and widely considered as one of the great American novels. Minnow Arts is hosting “I Turn My Body From The Sun” a large group art show curated by Jonathan Steinberg to celebrate this anniversary. A wide variety of subject matter and artistic media will be on display. The show opens on October 2nd from 5 to 9pm and hangs through November 15th. ARTIST STATEMENT: ELIZABETH L. TRACY It‘s a pleasure to return to Santa Cruz to exhibit, as I have enjoyed a long history with this city. I graduated from UCSC in 1976, and after earning an MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, I returned for a few years in the early 1980s as Lecturer in Art and the manager of the printmaking studio. I later worked in Connecticut as an artist-in-residence at Trinity College and in Boston where I taught at Wheaton College and had a studio in Fort Point Channel. In 1992 I moved to Santa Monica, where I currently paint and teach private art classes in The Slanted Floor Studio. For the last 15 years I have been working on a series of oil paintings called “Constructing Paradise” and triptychs called “Turn of Events”. In these works, I aim to create a visual conversation between realistically rendered garden forms and super-imposed maps of gardens. These two elements have very different graphic qualities—one smoothly rendered and the other abstracted into dots and lines. The first conjures the experience of being in a garden, the later explores the concepts behind garden design. Gardens play many roles in our lives; They are places of sanctuary, meditation, play, and nurture, and are significant in most religions and many myths. My intent for the paintings is for the various experiences of being in a particular garden to resonate, while also suggesting its human design. _ Join us for a lovely evening welcoming Santa Monica-based artist, Elizabeth Tracy. Rocky Wagers and Jack Howe bring together two distinctly different approaches to assemblage and the art of the found object. Through antique fragments, cast-offs, curious finds, and objects marked by time and use, each creates work with an unmistakably individual point of view. ROCKY WAGERS Rocky is set to bring some of the most unique creations to this September and October art show. He originally began his artistic career as a weaver, but his path shifted dramatically when he realized the artistic potential in worn-out items that most people simply labeled as “junk.” Turning his attention to antique assemblage, he began collecting broken parts and cast-offs from the Victorian era through the 1920s, transforming forgotten relics into striking, imaginative works of art. His creations are wildly eclectic, ranging from a demonic skull to a goblet made of women’s legs. For the September and October art show, Rocky’s work will prominently feature a wealth of beads and seashells. This specific aesthetic harks back to a 19th-century practice among sailors, who traditionally crafted pictures and notes framed in seashells to bring home to their loved ones. Rocky describes his creative process as something of a dream sequence. He hunts down individual components, often keeping them around for years with the steady confidence that they will eventually find a purpose. Because he works primarily with historical fragments, he ensures that the legacy of his materials is preserved. JACK HOWE Santa Cruz artist Jack Howe creates assemblages from the accumulated evidence of everyday life—old photographs, antique objects, broken pieces, curious finds, and things that have acquired character through age and use. A longtime collector of antiques, Jack began making assemblage in the late 1980s, finding new possibilities in objects and fragments that might otherwise have been discarded. The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, which damaged much of his collection, further shaped this direction in

First Friday at Santa Cruz Art Expressions 🎨🎶 Doors open at 5 PM for an evening of art, music, and creative connection at Santa Cruz Art Expressions. Enjoy a live DJ set, light refreshments, and the buzz of First Friday energy as the gallery comes alive. Meet featured artist Kelli C. Foss, known for her vibrant abstract paintings and unmistakable, intuitive style. Guests are invited beyond the gallery walls and into her personal studio for an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at her process, works in progress, and the creative world that shapes her art. In addition to Foss’s work, explore a curated selection of artists on display throughout the space, offering a rich mix of styles and perspectives. Come to mingle, move to the music, and immerse yourself in an inspired evening celebrating art and community in the heart of Santa Cruz.

On the first Friday evening of every month, Santa Cruz galleries, shops, and cultural venues open their doors to showcase the works of Santa Cruz County artists. With a block party-like vibe, the multi-venue event provides an opportunity to discover local creative talent in a fun and festive setting. Many venues entice attendees with yummy cheese-and-wine-filled spreads, while others have food trucks joining in on the fun.

Join us on First Friday, October 2nd, from 5-7 pm at the Santa Cruz Mountains Art Center in downtown Ben Lomond for the opening reception of our latest exhibit: Dreaming in Color. This two-woman show featuring Tina Masciocchi (painter) and Kathryn Pierno (ceramicist) translates internal emotions into a vivid external reality. Their artwork invites viewers to lose themselves in a rich, non-linear narrative where color serves as the primary language of the soul.

The Mug is an exhibition celebrating the potter and the portrait. This show features nearly 200 mugs created by top potters and emerging mug makers throughout the US. In tandem, nine artists will exhibit work in textiles, clay, photography, and mixed media defining the portrait (aka ‘mug’). Each potter and portrait artist are exploring identity, utility, and belonging. Return to Santa Carla is a community art show celebrating Santa Cruz, The Lost Boys, and the strange, beautiful, enduring connection between the real place and the mythical Santa Carla it inspired. The exhibition brings together work from Santa Cruz County artists alongside fans and artists from around the world, showing how one film—and one very particular place—has continued to spark creativity, nostalgia, obsession, and imagination nearly four decades later. At its heart, Return to Santa Carla is about community, memory, and belonging: local artists responding to a piece of Santa Cruz cultural history, international fans sharing what the film and its world have meant to them, and all of those perspectives coming together in the place where it began. Part fanart show, part love letter to Santa Cruz, Return to Santa Carla celebrates the people, place, and creativity that have kept Santa Carla alive.

October’s First Friday brings together a slightly spooky mix of creatures, characters, and things that go bump in the night — bats, black cats, owls, crows, ghosts, and a few other oddballs that feel right at home this time of year. Featuring work by Doug Ross, Janet Hill, Matt Adrian, Emily Uchytil, Diana Hartman, Mari Minjoe, and Jon Turner, the show moves from eerie to funny to wonderfully strange, with each artist bringing their own take on the season.

With stories and fractured essays writer/actor Christopher Michael Palermo presents his unique perspective on the world as it is, was, and has always been.

The SLV Theatre Department is proud to present The Outsiders, a dramatic coming-of-age novel originally written by S.E. Hilton and adapted to stageplay by Christopher Sergel. This production is directed by high school seniors Ryan Jones and Benjamin Rotte. Performance dates are October 2nd-10th.
