Formed in San Jose in 1990, Sleep just might be the best American doom metal band of all time. After all, this three-piece wrote one of the most epic songs ever, the 63-minute marijuana-fueled opus, “Dopesmoker.” Even more epic is the legend behind the song, with the band using all the money the label gave them for an album on weed and returning with one long song. However, the band has recently run into some controversy as the bassist, Al Cisneros, is currently the only original member. The Ben Lomond Village Alliance is launching the 2026 Village Market, an expanded and reimagined version of last year’s Wee Kirk Market, bringing new energy to the San Lorenzo Valley. The season kicks off Saturday, June 6 at Ben Lomond County Park on Mill Street and continues on the first Saturday of each month through October, creating a consistent space for the community to gather. The market will feature a wide mix of local vendors, including fresh produce, prepared foods, artisans, and craft makers, along with live music and children’s activities designed to make each event welcoming for all ages. With its new location offering more space and a scenic setting, the Village Market builds on last year’s success while creating an even more vibrant and inclusive environment to connect, support local businesses, and celebrate the creativity and character of Ben Lomond.

Bill Trimpi, better known as Mr. Bill, has been educating local students and telling stories for the past 50 years. But for the last 35, he has also connected with hundreds of students at Soccer Camp. He just put out a new children’s book, Out of the Box. To celebrate its release, there will be an afternoon of puppetry, fun, and creativity. Along with the puppet show, there will be a Santa-Cruz-themed activity book filled with non-competitive games. Surfrider Foundation Santa Cruz is inviting community members to join its Fundraising Beach Cleanup-a-Thon at Rio Del Mar State Beach on Sunday, October 4, from 9:00 to 11:00 AM. The event will bring volunteers together to remove trash from the beach while raising funds to support Surfrider Santa Cruz’s local programs and free community cleanups. The concept is simple: participants sign up for the cleanup and ask friends, family, and coworkers to pledge donations based on the total amount of trash collected. After the cleanup, Surfrider volunteers will weigh the collective total of trash removed, and participating sponsors will make donations based on the Chapter-wide total. Supporters can also set a cap on their donation amount (for example, no more than $50). “Every piece of trash we remove makes a difference, but when our community comes together, we can make an even bigger impact,” said Darcie Connell, Co-Chair and Volunteer Coordinator of Surfrider Santa Cruz. “This event gives people a fun way to get involved while helping fund the programs that keep our beaches clean and protect our local coastline.” Surfrider Santa Cruz is a 100% volunteer-run Chapter. Funds raised through the Cleanup-a-Thon will support local programs including beach cleanups, Blue Water Task Force water quality testing, and other efforts to protect the Santa Cruz coastline. Participants are encouraged to invite friends, family, and coworkers to support the event by making pledges through the Chapter’s fundraising form. They’ll learn about animal behavior, responsible pet care, shelter life, and safe animal handling before putting their new knowledge into practice by spending quality time helping our cats and dogs feel loved and confident. PAWS Afterschool Club (Ages 7–10) Looking for something fun to do after school? Love animals? Join PAWS and discover what it takes to care for shelter animals while making new friends and learning through hands-on activities! Each week, children enjoy one hour of fun animal-themed education and activities, followed by one hour socializing with our shelter animals. They’ll learn about animal behavior, responsible pet care, shelter life, and safe animal handling before putting their new knowledge into practice by spending quality time helping our cats and dogs feel loved and confident. Children begin with PAWS Foundations, a three-week introductory program. After graduating, they become PAWS Ambassadors, returning for additional sessions to build new skills, spend more time with the animals, and take on greater responsibilities as they progress toward becoming future Santa Cruz SPCA volunteers. Each session includes one hour of hands-on animal care projects—creating enrichment, preparing supplies, and helping support the shelter team—followed by one hour socializing with our shelter animals. Preteen PAWS Tier 2, for returning students 10-12 years old, builds upon the children’s knowledge and skills about animals in PAWS Tier 1. The fair is free and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park in Felton in Santa Cruz County. The event is sponsored by the UC Agriculture and Natural Resources Fire Network & Santa Cruz Mountains Forests Program and California State Parks. "If conditions are right, you'll be able to see a prescribed fire carried out by local resource managers right in the heart of a Santa Cruz Mountains coast redwood grove" said Brian Woodward, UC Cooperative Extension forest advisor for Santa Cruz, San Mateo, and Santa Clara counties. PAWS Afterschool Club (Ages 7–10) Looking for something fun to do after school? Love animals? Join PAWS and discover what it takes to care for shelter animals while making new friends and learning through hands-on activities! Each week, children enjoy one hour of fun animal-themed education and activities, followed by one hour socializing with our shelter animals. They’ll learn about animal behavior, responsible pet care, shelter life, and safe animal handling before putting their new knowledge into practice by spending quality time helping our cats and dogs feel loved and confident. Children begin with PAWS Foundations, a three-week introductory program. After graduating, they become PAWS Ambassadors, returning for additional sessions to build new skills, spend more time with the animals, and take on greater responsibilities as they progress toward becoming future Santa Cruz SPCA volunteers. Hosted Mic’d Board Games 5 – 8 Trivia 8 – 10 The Game Night Collective is a Santa Cruz-based board game community that creates welcoming, hosted tabletop events where people can discover new games, meet new friends, and enjoy structured game nights without needing prior experience. Unlike a typical board game meetup where players are expected to know games or organize themselves, The Game Night Collective provides a curated experience. Each event includes a library of 30+ board games, guided game teaching, hosted featured games, community announcements, raffles, and opportunities to connect with other players. Whether you arrive alone or with a group, the goal is to make it easy to sit down and start playing. The flagship event takes place every Monday at The CRUZ Room, where attendees can enjoy open gaming, learn two featured games taught by founder Courtney Laschkewitsch, participate in trivia, browse the Merch Chest, and become part of Santa Cruz’s growing tabletop gaming community. At its core, The Game Night Collective exists to bring people together through board games. It combines the structure and consistency of a trivia company with the creativity, strategy, and social connection of modern tabletop gaming, creating a space where newcomers and experienced gamers alike can feel welcome.

We will sing, move, and play musical instruments together in Spanish and English. Juntos, cantaremos, nos moveremos y tocaremos instrumentos musicales en inglés y español. This free, bilingual class is for ages 0-5 and their caregivers.Each child participates at their own level in singing, moving, chanting, listening, watching, and exploring musical instruments. The class provides a variety of adult-child activities that are fun and offer new ways to play musically at home. This class meets monthly on the 2nd Tuesday.
