Mark the fall migration at one of the most beautiful places on the planet for the Monterey Bay Festival of Birds featuring field trips, workshops, family-fun activities, and keynote speakers. Activities are planned throughout the Monterey Bay area in Santa Cruz, Watsonville, Salinas, and Monterey. Preteen PAWS Tier 2, for returning students 10-12 years old, builds upon the children’s knowledge and skills about animals in PAWS Tier 1. It runs for three weeks and refines the children’s animal handling skills. The program establishes awareness of the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare and engages students in stories of animal rescues. The Santa Cruz County Parks Department hosts an annual Floating Pumpkin Patch at Simpkins Family Swim Center in Santa Cruz, California. The event allows people to swim and dive for pumpkins, which they can then decorate at a station with crafts. The event also includes games, prizes, and open swim time . Rescue Readers is a special opportunity to read bedtime stories to our shelter animals while helping them feel calm, comfortable, and cared for as they settle in for the night. Kids can choose to read to dogs or cats and enjoy a cozy 30-minute session filled with stories, quiet companionship, and plenty of animal love. It’s also a wonderful way for young readers to build confidence and practice their reading skills with a completely non-judgmental audience, our animals are happy to listen to every story! Why Join Rescue Readers? • Build reading confidence in a fun, relaxed environment • Help shelter animals feel calm and comfortable at bedtime • Practice kindness, empathy, and gentle animal interactions • Make it a special family or friend experience • Create meaningful memories while supporting animals in need Each 30-minute session accommodates two people, one child reader and one accompanying adult.
