Explore the past at Rancho San Andrés! Discover how archaeology helps uncover the stories of the Castro Adobe through live demonstrations, hands-on activities, and a special presentation by State Historian Michael Grone (11:30 a.m.) on how archaeological discoveries have helped reveal the Adobe’s past. The Santa Cruz Archaeological Society will be on hand with live demonstrations and fun activities for the entire family. Young archaeologists can explore a sample excavation grid and try their hand at digging and sifting for replica artifacts—just like archaeologists do in the field! In addition, the Summer Archaeology Project (SAP) from Santa Cruz Mission State Historic Park will demonstrate how archaeological finds are carefully identified, sorted, and studied—and how even the smallest discoveries can provide clues about the people who once lived here. Throughout the day, enjoy live music in the garden, children’s crafts, knowledgeable docents, and the opportunity to explore the fully restored 176-year-old adobe hacienda of the Castro family. Bring a picnic lunch and spend the day surrounded by history, craftsmanship, and the beauty of the Watsonville countryside.
