Meet the salmonids! Join the Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project for an exclusive tour of their hatchery in Davenport where youโ€™ll enjoy an overview of salmonids, their lifecycle, ecology, and the natural and human-caused threats they face. This tour will explore the differences between hatchery models, highlighting work focused on conservation, genetic diversity, disease mitigation, ecosystem health and optimizing wild survival. The MBSTP Kingfisher Flat Genetic Conservation Hatchery (KFGCH) has been in operation since 1985, and is the only privately-run salmonid rearing facility on Californiaโ€™s Central Coast. This facility is critical to the recovery of local, native salmonids, namely federally endangered Central California Coast coho salmon and threatened steelhead. MBSTP hatchery staff hold a combined total of over 35 years of experience in aquaculture- this in-depth knowledge is fundamental to the accomplishment of MBSTP program objectives. Meetup details will be shared upon registration About the Facilitator Nathan Smith is the Education & Outreach Coordinator for the Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project. A Santa Cruz native, he holds a B.S. in Biology, an M.A. in Education, and an M.S. in Environmental Engineering. His background includes ecological fieldwork in Central and South America, environmental compliance for the City of Watsonville, and science education. Nathan is passionate about connecting people with the natural history and ecology of Californiaโ€™s watersheds through engaging, hands-on learning and conservation.
