InterAct Open Mic at Satori Arts. FREE community poetry jam featuring Kate O'Neill Are you ready to get your poetry on? Join us on August 18, 2026 at Satori Arts for InterAct , a FREE open mic night, from 7-9 pm, featuring poet Kate OโNeill. Kate OโNeill has been working for social change since Earth Day 1970. She holds degrees in Education (Ed.D. Harvard, โ97) and Creative Writing (MFA, IAIA, โ18) and has served as a community college professor for more than three decades. Her poems have appeared in Poetry Ireland Review , Journal of War, Literature and the Arts, Taos Journal of Poetry, Skylight 47 and in numerous anthologies. Her works include a full-length book: Harp in Hand: Poems of Ireland (3: A Taos Press, 2026) and a chapbook Flap & Dust: Poems of Resistance (Bookleaf, 2026) both forged in belonging, resistance and a sense of spirit. She holds dual United States-Irish citizenship and lives with her wife and family in Northern New Mexico. A writing workshop the 55+ age group to reflect on awareness of the natural environment and climate change. This encourages community, socialization, and creativity among the older individuals who may be at higher risk for isolation and mental health. Stephany Buswell has been in writersโ group for approximately ten years. What has grown out of this was her memoir, published in 2022. She is currently working on her second book, both memoir and comedy writing, telling stories of her cake disasters and interesting situations. Stephany is a retired pastry chef and has spent the last fifty years making cakes for all occasions. Writing has become her new passion after retiring as a pastry chef instructor. Elbina Batala Rafizadeh is a published writer, poet, and Cal Poet teacher. Her first book of poetry was published in 2024. She is also co-editor of an anthology of peace poetry published in 2024. She has facilitated short story and poetry writing groups since 1997. She is a member of the Writers of Color and a California Poet teacher. She is now semi-retired and teaches one health class at West Valley Mission College. Her cultural heritage and experiences in the natural world inform her writing. In Everything I Touch Isโ& IsnโtโYou, David Allen Sullivan and Ignatius Valentine Aloysius engage in a daring poetic conversation, weaving poems from one anotherโs lines and inventing new collaborative forms. Written in a time of political fracture, the poems insist on attention, tenderness, and survival. The collection moves through grief, love, politics, and bearing witness, dissolving the boundaries between self and other to reveal a shared, living voice. Former Santa Cruz county poet laureate, David Allen Sullivan won the Mary Ballard Chapbook poetry prize for Take Wing. His book Black Butterflies over Baghdad was selected for the Hilary Tham Capital Collection by Tim Seibles. He teaches at Cabrillo College, where he edits the Porter Gulch Review with his students. Ignatius Valentine Aloysius earned his MFA in Creative Writing from Northwestern University, Chicago, where he teaches. He is the author of the literary novel Fishhead. Republic of Want (Tortoise Books, 2020), & his prose and poetry have appeared in many journals. Ignatius is the current host & curator of the long-running reading series Sunday Salon Chicago. He serves as Co-Chair of the Curatorial Board at Ragdale Foundation, where he is also a Board of Trustees member. A writing workshop the 55+ age group to reflect on awareness of the natural environment and climate change. This encourages community, socialization, and creativity among the older individuals who may be at higher risk for isolation and mental health. Stephany Buswell has been in writersโ group for approximately ten years. What has grown out of this was her memoir, published in 2022. She is currently working on her second book, both memoir and comedy writing, telling stories of her cake disasters and interesting situations. Stephany is a retired pastry chef and has spent the last fifty years making cakes for all occasions. Writing has become her new passion after retiring as a pastry chef instructor. Elbina Batala Rafizadeh is a published writer, poet, and Cal Poet teacher. Her first book of poetry was published in 2024. She is also co-editor of an anthology of peace poetry published in 2024. She has facilitated short story and poetry writing groups since 1997. She is a member of the Writers of Color and a California Poet teacher. She is now semi-retired and teaches one health class at West Valley Mission College. Her cultural heritage and experiences in the natural world inform her writing. Join us on October 20, 2026 at Satori Arts for InterAct , a FREE open mic night, from 7-9 pm, featuring the anthology launch reading of How to Get Home in the Dark: Poems on Mental Health and Healing Come and share poems from the heart. Emilie Lygren, Nancy Miller Gomez, Farnaz Fatemi, and other local poets will read from How to Get Home in the Dark, a new anthology featuring established and emerging writers who take inventory of what impacts their mental health, what has contributed to their healing and growth, and offer short poems for hard days. Emilie Lygren is a poet and outdoor educator who has taught writing in classrooms, research stations, graduate programs, parks, libraries, and beyond. She has also written two books of poetry and dozens of resources on science education and social emotional learning. Emilie lives in San Rafael, CA. Nancy Miller Gomez (she/her) is the author of Inconsolable Objects (YesYes Books, 2024), winner of the 2025 Paterson Prize in Poetry. She served as the Poet Laureate of Santa Cruz County, California, for 2025 and 2026 and received a 2025 Laureate Fellowship Award from The Academy of American Poets. Farnaz Fatemi is an Iranian American writer, former Santa Cruz County Poet Laureate, Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellow, and founding member of The Hive Poetry Collective. Magpie on the Gallows: Poems on the Art of Bosch and Bruegel collects famous and newly minted poems on the art of Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel the Elder. These painters from the Northern Renaissance are startlingly relevant today, with their critiques of authorities, exposure of church hypocrisies, and assault on holier-than-thou judgments. Though the artworks were created in the 1500s โ featuring surrealistic scenes from dreams and nightmares, illustrations of ancient proverbs, and close examination of natural landscapes and peasant life โ they still mesmerize.
