UCSC: Carlos Motta Exhibition
Carlos Mottaβs When Time Stands Still features new and recent installations, videos, and sculptures highlighting the artistβs preoccupation with the historical and aesthetic productions of difference and marginalization that shape the present. The selection of artworks in the exhibition explore the unsettling experience of living in a time that seems violently stuck on repeat. Archetypal figures from art history (a fool, a siren, a witness, a victim) reappear in the current moment as containers of time, bringing the past of imperialism, colonization, and displacement into a present marked by the rise of anti-immigration politics, climate injustice, and other forms of disposability. Some works challenge this violent repetition of time. The clock moves, if gruelingly, in an endurance-based video performance, No One, 2025. For forty-six minutes, the artist undertakes to keep his eyes open, witnessing, withstanding, confronting, and resisting the bombardment of images, both historical and otherwise, that normalize harm. In another video work, Gravity, 2024, performers enact rescue carries, supporting each other until they canβt bear the weight. Together, the artworks act as a proposal about how to rethink timeβhow to slow timeβwith a poetic and aesthetic cadence that might counter the numbing reverberations of living in the present. When Time Stands Still is organized as part of Visualizing Abolition, an arts-based initiative that reaches across prison borders to create a future free of prisons. About the Artist Carlos Motta (b. 1978, Colombia) is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice documents the social conditions and political struggles of sexual, gender, and ethnic communities, challenging normative discourses through acts of self-representation. His work has been the focus of several survey exhibitions.

Victor βMarka27β QuiΓ±onez: Ni de AquΓ, Ni de AllΓ‘
Organized in partnership with the Center for Art and Advocacy, located in Brooklyn, New York, Ni de AquΓ, Ni de AllΓ‘ ( Not From Here, Not From There ) by multidisciplinary artist Victor βMarka27β QuiΓ±onez features a wide range of artworks that issue a bold declaration of dual belonging, including altars, an elaborately immersive botanica, paintings referencing visual symbolism drawn from textiles, graffiti and community traditions, and, in a series called I.C.E. Scream , large, brightly colored resin sculptures in the shape of melting Mexican paletas (popsicles). As the exhibition title suggests (a phrase widely used in bilingual and bicultural communities), these artworks reflect the artistβs interest in the experience of living between worlds even as violent notions of nationalism and identity pervade. Accompanying the exhibition, Elevar la Cultura , an immersive sculptural installation featuring a twenty-two-foot-tall pyramid built from ice coolers adorned with ancestral textiles, sacred symbols, and mural work will be on view at Santa Cruz Barrios Unidos (1817 Soquel) November 7, 2026- March 7, 2027. As QuiΓ±onez explains, this sculpture epitomizes the contradictions of livingβand laboringβas an immigrant in the United States: βMost people see the cooler as a tool for leisureβ¦for barbecues, tailgating, and celebrations. But for immigrant communities, the cooler is a tool and symbol for opportunity and independence. In every major city, you see families and vendors selling fruit, food, and water out of these coolers on the streets and in subway stations. Theyβre a necessity for survival and a way to start an honest living,β the artist shares. The Institute of Arts and Sciences will be the second venue to successfully present Ni de AquΓ, Ni de AllΓ‘ to the public. First organized by Boston University Art Galleries and curated by Kate Fowle in September of 2025, the exhibition debuted to critical acclaim before gaining national attention after its abrupt removal from

Artist Talks: Jean Carla Rodea, Dorothy R. Santos, and Abram Stern
Join us for a series of daytime talks with SPAM artists Jean Carla Rodea, Dorothy R. Santos, and Abram Stern. Program Jean Carla Rodea - The Archive is a Body. Rather than presenting a chronological review of my practice, this session investigates how memory is recorded, distorted, embodied, and reconstructed. Dorothy R. Santos - untitled talk Abram Stern - untitled talk About the Artists Jean Carla Rodea Jean Carla Rodea is an interdisciplinary artist with a research-based practice, originally from Mexico City and currently based between San Francisco, CA, and Brooklyn, NY. Their work spans music, sound, vocality, performance, poetry, photography, video, and sculpture, moving fluidly between solo projects and collaborative, cross-disciplinary environments. They draw from shifting identities, immigration, ritual, performance, ecology, construction work, and improvisation, engaging deeply with time-based media and the diverse spaces where these interactions take place. A central focus of their practice is the exploration of critical socio-political issues, including the politics of the body, gender, memory, and imbalanced human relationships. They are particularly invested in how time is constructed through memory, and how those memories-whether embodied or embedded within spaces-are recorded, fragmented, and continually reconstructed. This investigation opens pathways for fiction and speculative dimensions to disrupt and challenge dominant narratives. Archival research is a recurring methodology in their work, encompassing both institutional and personal archives. From these materials, they craft speculative histories, responding to documents, physical traces, and spaces. In their engagement with the archive, they embody multiple performative roles: witness, observer, participant, and researcher, each inhabiting the temporary sites where events unfold. Dorothy R. Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde
In the spring of 1895, Oscar Wilde was the most celebrated playwright in London β An Ideal Husband and The Importance of Being Earnest were both playing in the West End. By the end of May he was in prison, sentenced to two years' hard labor for "gross indecency". Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde tells the story of that crushing downfall: the libel suit Wilde brought against the Marquess of Queensberry β the father of his lover, Lord Alfred Douglas β and the two criminal trials that followed when the suit collapsed. He died in destitution three years later. MoisΓ©s Kaufman's play, first staged Off-Broadway in 1997, is created from the historical record: trial transcripts, letters, newspaper accounts, memoirs, and Wilde's own writings. The result is part courtroom drama, part Greek tragedy β a company of actors taking on dozens of roles to examine not just what happened to Wilde, but what his trials reveal about art, morality, celebrity, and the law. The questions the play raises were recognized and debated in 1895, were highly relevant in 1997 when the play was first produced, and resonate just as strongly today when questions of identity and gender are still contentious to the point of violence. Kaufman however goes beyond a simple moralistic story (as evidenced by the quote above, which he uses to frame his play). Wilde is extraordinary not only in his intellect and wit but also in his arrogance and disregard for so many people he uses in his pursuit of pleasure. Human nature in all its complexity is on full display here. Kaufman went on to write and direct The Laramie Project, one of the most performed plays in the American repertoire, exploring some of the same issues in a more contemporary context. Gross Indecency was his breakthrough though β named one of the year's best plays by Time, the New York Times, and many others. It remains his most theatrically daring work, confronting the relationship between societal norms and individual freedom, draw

The band has continued to evolve, mixing in their own originals alongside twisted acoustic reimaginings of contemporary pop hits such as Lourde's "Royals" and cult classics such as MotΓΒΆrhead's "Ace of Spades." Coffee Zombie Collective takes the songs you love, or love to hate, and weaves them into medlies, or upside-down interpretations that always leaves audiences smiling. The band's high-energy stage performances whip audiences into a sing-along dance frenzy. The repeated on-stage mantra is "If you know the words, sing along. If you don't know the words, sing louder!" If you're at the show, you're part of the collective, and highly encouraged to contribute in the frisky, sweaty, ad-libbed sound explosion that is Coffee Zombie Collective. Carlos Motta: When Time Stands Still
Carlos Mottaβs When Time Stands Still, the artistβs second solo show with the IAS , features new and recent installations, videos, and sculptures highlighting the artistβs preoccupation with the historical and aesthetic productions of difference and marginalization that shape the present. The clock moves, if gruelingly, in an endurance-based video performance, No One , 2025. For forty-six minutes, the artist undertakes to keep his eyes open, witnessing, withstanding, confronting, and resisting the bombardment of images, both historical and otherwise, that normalize harm. In another video work, Gravity , 2024, performers enact rescue carries, supporting each other until they canβt bear the weight. Carlos Motta (b. 1978, Colombia) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work has been shown widely nationally and internationally. Solo exhibitions venues include the Museu dβArt Contemporani de Barcelona; Nikolaj Kunsthal, Copenhagen; Museo de Arte Moderno de BogotΓ‘; Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, OH ; RΓΆda Sten Konsthall, Gothenburg, Sweden; Galeria Vermelho, SΓ£o Paulo; PΓ©rez Art Museum Miami (PAMM); Tate Modern, London; and

UCSC: Victor βMarka27β Exhibition
βNi de aquΓ, ni de allΓ‘β (βneither from here, nor thereβ), is a phrase commonly used by bilingual, bicultural communities. In the exhibition the phrase becomes a bold declaration of dual belonging against a violent notion of nationalism and identity. Through paintings, immersive installations, sculptural works, and a curated soundscape, Marka27 invites gallery goers into a vibrant, layered world where street culture meets Indigenous tradition, and personal memory collides with collective truth and activism. Curated by internationally recognized curator Kate Fowle, this exhibition is organized in partnership with The Center for Art & Advocacy and as part of Visualizing Abolition, an arts-based initiative that reaches across prison borders to contribute to the unfolding collective story and alternative imagining underway to create a future free of prisons. ABOUT THE ARTIST: Victor βMarka27β QuiΓ±onez is a renowned visual artist working at the intersections of contemporary art, graffiti, vinyl toys, fashion and design, and art activism.

Join us for a series of daytime talks with SPAM artists Rohan Chander and Ava Koohbor. Program Ava Koohbor - Four Modes of Sonic Behavior: Oscillation / Vibration / Circulation / Pulsation. What can we learn from the body as a system? I explore oscillation, vibration, circulation, and pulsation as four forms of behavior that can become compositional structures. Through simple mechanisms and their interactions, I look at how complexity and unpredictability can emerge from a system. Rohan Chander - untitled talk About the Artists Rohan Chander is a media artist, electronic musician, and performance artist with an interest in recombinatory approaches to sound and aesthetic. Rooted in political and personal inquiry, he often draws from sample-based artforms, performance art, speculative fiction, and historical research. His work has been described as "hypersensory" (Washington Post), "remarkably alive" (The Wire Magazine), and of "transcendent metamorphosis" (I Care If You Listen). Under his solo DIY project BAKUDI SCREAM, I won the Gaudeamus Prize for Music Composition in 2022. Ava Koohbor works between sculpture and instrument, poetry and circuitry, memory and electronics, Tehran and San Francisco. Her practice explores sound as a field of relations, where listening, making, and material continually reorganize one another. Her work takes shape through instruments, performances, installations, exhibitions, and books. Her latest book, Of Flesh and Frequency: A Poetics of Sound Making, was published by Lithic Press in 2026.

Bookshop Santa Cruz and The Humanities Institute welcome Min Jin Lee, the National Book Award finalist and New York Times bestselling author of Pachinko , who returns with American Hagwon βa breathtaking contemporary epic, by turns sweeping and intimate, that reckons with ambition and moderation, lust and loyalty, personal dreams and familial duty. βWith her gift for wonderfully empathetic storytelling, this is a profoundly generous and humane novel about duty, family, and the dream of a better lifeβ¦. I was fully absorbed by the fates of the Koh family and, as the novel worked its cumulative magic, deeply moved by this masterful tale of sacrifice, familial devotion, and, ultimately, acceptance.β βDouglas Stuart, author of John of John and Shuggie Bain, winner of the Booker Prize βMin Jin Lee brings grand ambition, fierce heart, and the tenderest hope to a novel I didnβt want to end.β βRoxane Gay, bestselling author of Bad Feminist and Hunger In schools and churches, hotel rooms and nail salons, law firms and fried-fish shops; in cramped, dingy apartments and luxury, gated communities, the men, women, and children in American Hagwon struggle to find satisfaction and meaning in a world that seems to grow less forgiving with each passing year. Once comfortably middle class in Korea, John and Helen Koh and their three childrenβBo, DH, and Midoβfind their lives upended, first by a shocking betrayal by Johnβs oldest friend, then by the 1997 Asian financial crisis. Desperately striving to regain their footing, they leave Seoul for Sydney and eventually settle in Southern Californiaβwhere new vistas of opportunity open up for the children as their parents, strangers in a strange land, must adjust to a new life in which their experience and education mean little, and they set their sights on whatever it takes to provide for their childrenβs futures. The Kohs, their friends, relatives, and even their foes move in and out of each otherβs lives as they navigate new courses acro
