This alt rock act from Baton Rouge might still be fledgling (last year saw their first headline tour), but they are already making waves. Their song “Virginia” was co-written by Kevin Griffin of Better Than Ezra, their song “The Fence” was produced by Cage the Elephant’s Brad Shultz, and last year Coldplay’s Chris Martin attended their show at Vanderbilt University. Their tone borrows elements from The Strokes with 1990s college rock for a sound that’s familiar but still fresh and catchy. So, it’s kind of wild to find out they just dropped their debut full-length on September 18th, which only confirms this group has much more in store for hungry ears. -Mat Weir; Good Times Santa Cruz

That being said, any fan of TV’s Top Chef also knows that if it’s not going to be fancy, then it has to be perfect or else it falls flat and becomes plain ol’ basic. It’s a concept that electronic musician Marielle V Jakobsons is familiar with, even if she doesn’t watch the show. Her stripped-down, ambient music is miminal but not basic. She plays with the space within each song to create a sound that’s light, moving and somehow also deeply personal. Per a 2024 Jam Cruise writer, This was the soul music I grew up with in the 60s and 70s, but I confess I wasnt expecting [Diggin Dirt] to be throwing it down this hard. This group is impossibly tight, and Zach Alder might be the best soul shouter Ive ever heard, and Ive heard a few. Their infectious sound is fueled by blazing horns, searing guitars and a relentlessly driving rhythm section, and tying it all together is the bands frontman who launches the ensemble into rarefied air with his pipes, charisma and natural-born soul. With flashes of James Brown or Sly and the Family Stone, Otis Redding or Tower of Power, the bands sound is both familiar and yet refreshingly original, layering psychedelic rock, Motown soul, afrobeat and even reggae atop a thick foundation of late-60s inspired funk.

The purpose of this Tibetan spiritual dance is to avert global calamities and bring peace and harmony to the world. Mipham Rinpoche prophesied that if this dance tradition can be propagated, then diseases, famines, and warfare would disappear without a trace, and the sun of happiness would shine. The late Khenpo Jigme Phuntsok promoted this dance practice. Tulku Lakshey Zangpo will teach these dances. Everyone of any age is very welcome. Previous experience or dance skills are not required. And they are meant to be joyful and fun.
